#1 Naples Pizza Party, Naples
What is one of the first things that pop in your mind when you think of Italy? Let me guess – pizza! If you have been to Italy, there is simply no chance to miss trying one of the country’s traditional dishes. And if you happen to visit Naples during 1st and 6th of September, then you definitely should not miss this festival.
As you can guess from the name, it will be all about pizzas. There will be workshops, competitions, shows, music, and lots of fun. You will have the chance to try some very delicious types of pizza and to enjoy your time in Italy even more.
#2 Festival of the Madonna of the Sick, Misterbianco
If you have been to Italy, or if you have read about their culture, you will probably know that Italians are very religious and a lot of their holidays have to do with religion and miracles.
One such miracle occurred after the disaster in 1669. Mt Etna erupted and the lava destroyed the area Misterbianco apart from the sanctuary with the name of the Madonna.
Everybody believed it was a miracle and that is why people in the area are celebrating it every first weekend of September. So, if you are wondering what to do this weekend if you are in the area, you can visit the celebration.
#3 Juliet’s Birthday, Verona
O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo
You probably remember one of most famous quotes from Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, the story that melts even the coldest hearts. If you are a fan of this famous love story, then you could visit the hometown of the characters and visit Verona.
The reason to do it in September and more precisely on the 12th is Juliet’s birthday. On this day of the year all citizens and guests of Verona have the opportunity to attend the party held in honor of the famous Shakespearean heroine.
Since it is a birthday party, you can expect plenty of music, dances, street performances and delicious food. And there is a special parade honoring the two families the Montagues and the Capulets. It is a very touching event for all the people who like the play.
#4 Festival of the Madonna of the Sea, Patti
The next festival in the list is held during the second weekend of September and it is honoring another Madonna, the Madonna of the Sea. The festival is held in Patti which is a town in northern Sicily.
If you decide to attend it you will be part of a beautiful boat procession which will be led by a lightened boat with a statue of the Madonna. The whole event is very beautiful and it is accompanied by good food, music and dancing.
#5 Palio di San Rocco, Florence
Palio is the name of the horserace in Italy and it is held at different times during the summer in different regions of Italy. The Palio that you have the chance to visit is held in FiglineValdarno which is located near Florence.
It is celebrating the end of the summer and that is why it is held during the first week of September. It includes not only the traditional horseraces but also jousting tournaments and archery. And as you can probably guess, there will also be food and music.
