Usually, the bun hairstyles are very elegant and conservative, which makes them inappropriate for casual events and meeting, because of the too-formal-look they will create. But, if you want to create a chignon in order to have your hair gathered and away from your face, but the event is extremely casual – sort of home movie night with friends. Such an occasion requires nothing of messy pontytail or some kind of braided hairstyle. But I will suggest you a combination between the messy ponytail and the elegant chignon – the messy bun. Take a look at the steps and you will see how to adjust the elegant hairstyle into a casual effect. Here we go:

  • There is a little bit of preparation before the actual bun-making steps. You have to brush the hair to the back and you must create a volume at the crown area. You can apply the back-combing technique with a tight-tooth comb. In order to save the volume last longer, you should apply a hair spray occasionally while teasing the hair.

  • Then, separate the hair into three sections – middle, left and right. The side sections must be smaller than the middle one, because you will use them for decoration.

  • So, tie the middle section into a low ponytail.

  • Make a hole above the hair band and pull through that hole the tail. The base of the ponytail is twisted now.

  • Roll up the tail and tuck it into the hole. Secure the just-created-bun with bobby pins.

  • Now, take the left section of hair that you have separated earlier. Twist it and pull out some strands in order to make the twist look messy and fluffy.

  • Then attach it above the bun and secure with bobby pins again. If you want to be sure about the stability of the bun, you should apply hair spray on the bobby pins, they will hold the hair better and stronger this way.

  • Repeat these steps with the other side.

  • Done!
